Florida seawall construction and repair is a staple in our portfolio of marine construction services here at JSC Contracting. If you want to enjoy your waterfront property without worrying about the water reclaiming your lot a seawall is both necessary and prudent.
Don’t let the name fool you, seawalls are used for lakes, rivers, and springs too. Proper construction depends on materials, the environment, and soil conditions. This is key to a seawall that will stand the test of time and mother nature. Here we will break down some of the basics of seawall construction and repair.
When Should I Build a Seawall?
You may not have a seawall right now on your waterfront property. You may have a sloping lot that meets the water. A seawall can be a great improvement to your property. A seawall can stabilize any soil erosion due to storm surge or water disturbances from boating activity. It can also create an effective docking area for boats, allowing for easy access.
Here’s a list of some of the reasons to construct a seawall:
- Provides a solid foundation for landscaping
- Easily attach a boat lift with deep enough water
- Additional docking spaces for boats
- Prevents soil erosion to your lot
- Storm surge defense
- Increased property value
- Improved home owners insurance rates
This is just a few of the reasons why a seawall could make sense for you. Getting the job done right matters and that’s where we come in.
What Do I Need to Know about Florida Seawall Construction?
Florida has many different types of bodies of water, and which you’re building on greatly affects the construction of your seawall. Seawall construction consists of a proper foundation, material selection, and aesthetic options.
Oftentimes we work in conjunction with a geotechnical engineer to determine the amount of pressure the soil behind the wall with exert on the seawall. This can dictate whether your seawall would call for pressure treated wood pilons or galvanized steal. Additionally the seawall can be made of pressure treated lumber or galvanized steel panels.
We then use an anchoring tie back system to ensure that any pressure exerted into the wall from your lot does not bulge your sea wall into the water. The amount of anchors and the depth of anchoring needed are engineered and calculated, not guessed. This is along with your pilons are the foundation of your seawall.
You do have some design options with your seawall as well, the cap can be concrete, wood, or a composite board. We can add lighting, boat anchors, boat lifts, ladders and more. Our slogan as JSC Contracting Inc, is you dream it, we build it.
Ultimately the goal is to over engineer your seawall to a reasonable degree without too much additional cost. Otherwise we might get into the next topic, seawall repair.
Seawall Repair in Florida
Your seawall may need repair for a few reasons. Sometimes mother nature does in fact win, this can be from an under engineered seawall, or just time eroding anchors or paneling. Oftentimes with a significant enough storm, no amount of engineering can withstand the pressures created and your seawall will fail or get washed out.
So How Do You Know When You Need Your Seawall Repaired?
The signs you may need your seawall repaired can range from being subtle to obvious. If you see your seawall is bulging, that’s an obvious sign it needs repair. If the cap of your seawall is cracked that’s another obvious sign. Less obvious signs may include soil erosion behind the seawall or perhaps you might see water pooling behind the seawall. If you see anchors rusting away its probably worth getting it inspected.
Early repairs seawalls are crucial. Any weakness may lead to greater more expensive problems. If one of our famous Florida hurricanes or tropical storms comes rolling through it may test the durability of your seawall. If it fails then you have a much harder problem to solve.
